Just when you thought the words “Facebook” and “university” would finally stop apprearing side-by-side in headlines across the country, the University of Prince Edward Island is getting in on the Facebook action, too.
The winning presidential candidate in UPEI’s student union election was disqualified because a Facebook group supporting him was up on election day (online campaigning is also a big no-no in RSU elections). Although the would-be prez said he didn’t start the group and that he tried to have it shut down, it was still up and running on election day. As a result, they’re having another election in the next two weeks. Oddly enough, the would-be winner and runner up are excited about the redo and hope there would be a larger voter turnout.
UPEI is boring. It’s just not fun without accusations of election rigging, conflicts of interests and an Eyeopener photographer bursting through a recount room. We rock.
